With deep feelings of joy, I welcome you all to the 2019 International Day of Cooperatives in our dear State Organized by Ogun State Cooperatives Federation (OGSCOFED) Limited, the umbrella body for the Cooperative Movement in Ogun State. This year’s edition marks the 25th United Nations International Day of Cooperative thereby showcasing the activities of the Movement as an organization that moves and sustains the social, economic and cultural development of the world hence the  declaration of the first Saturday in the month of July every year as “International Day of Cooperatives in 1995. Suffice to note that OGSCOFED Ltd joined rest of the world in 2009 celebration and this year celebration marks the 6th edition in her annals of history following our decision to celebrate the day biennially to reduce the financial burden on our members.

Your Excellency Sir, we are delighted to inform you that the last three out of four Cooperatives Day celebrated witnessed the physical presence of the immediate past Governor. It is therefore a greater joy and honour to have your EXCELLENCY PRINCE (DR.) DAPO ABIODUN MFR gracing this year’s celebration physically in a deeper show of love and appreciation of the tremendous contributions of the Movement to socio-economic development and progress of our state.

May I at this juncture on behalf of the Cooperative Movement congratulate you on your inauguration as the 5th Executive Governor of our state which coincidentally fell on your birthday, we say double congratulations Sir. We equally congratulate your Excellency on the celebration of the maiden edition of the National Democracy Day on the 12th of June, 2019. We wish you a better tenure in Office and fervently pray your administration shall end up adjudged as the best in history of our dear State, Amen. However, with utmost humility and respect we will appreciate the repeat of this honour throughout your tenure Sir, even if it becomes an annual event in the State in future. While pledging our unalloyed and unflinching support to your Administration, the Cooperatives Movement looks forward to a brighter and rewarding future through prompt and regular remittances of deductions of our salary based Cooperative affiliates to enable them perform expected responsibilities and obligations for members comfort and benefit of the government, and prevent the negative effect of delayed remittances of the deduction has on the effective running of the State Cooperative Federation. In consonance with the Cooperative Laws, and regulations we beseech the government to relate with the Movement accordingly and prevent multiple taxation on our members.

It shall gladden our heart to see your Administration (in pursuit of the much pledged preparedness for training and re-training of the work force for an enhanced capacity building and efficient service delivery) to have realized our long awaited dreams of having a Monotechnic of Cooperative by upgrading the status of Ogun State Cooperative College Ijeja Abeokuta Ogun State like other Federal Cooperative Colleges in Nigeria.

Pertinent to mention that in compliance with one of the principles of Cooperation (Cooperation among Cooperatives) our members often attend and participate as delegates at National and International Meetings, Conference, Summits, Workshop and other global assemblies in other part of the world either as self-sponsored or sponsored by the  Movement. Suffice to use this medium humbly crave for the sponsorship of Cooperative Leader as well as the staff of the Regulatory Department at such International meetings by your administration Sir.


Putting it succinctly the theme for this year celebration of International Day of Cooperatives

“COOPS FOR DECENT WORK” encapsulates the immensurable contributions of the Cooperative Movement to preservation of employment and promotion of decent work in world economy. As you are aware Cooperatives are people-centered enterprises characterized by democratic control which places higher premium on human development and social justice within the work place which provides the much needed impetus for members’ participation and in the process allowing them to change their lives, their communities and world positively. Recent statistics alludes to the fact that Cooperatives around the world employ or are the main source of income for over 280 million people–almost 10% of humanity’s total working population.


The International Cooperatives Alliance, ICA is the global voice of the Cooperative Movement composed of 1.2 .billion members spread across the 110 countries of the world. The Cooperative Movement shares and upholds the Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030 vision of a World

  • Free and devoid of poverty where humans can fulfill their potential in dignity, equality and in healthy environment;
  • Where people cohabits peacefully and enjoy values in decent work in a sustainable economic growth viz:
  • Freedom of association and full recognition of the right to collective bargaining.
  • Elimination of discrimination in employment
  • Elimination of all forms of forced or compulsory labour and end to child labour.
  • Prohibition of sexual harassment, unwelcomed sexual advances or conduct of intimidation, hostile and offensive nature.

In tandem with the above declaration by ICA, we charge all stakeholders (either Government or Private concerns) in the social and economic strata to conform and abide strictly by the lesson drawn from the theme of this year’s International Day of Cooperatives by providing avenues for decent work.

Your Excellency Sir and our invited guests, it will interest you to know that this celebration commenced about twelve days ago with rallies by the Movement held at various nooks and crannies of  the three Senatorial Districts of Ogun State among other activities and events. The grand finale of 2019 International Day of Cooperatives in Ogun State today will witness another milestone and memorable events as both your EXCELLENCY PRINCE (DR.) DAPO ABIODUN MFR and amiable wife Her EXCELLENCY MRS. BAMIDELE ABIODUN have been billed for decoration as the Movement Grand Patron and Grand Patroness respectively. May I crave your indulgence at this point to carry out this assignment in few minutes Sir.

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen it is trite to inform that our women are also here with display/exhibition of their various products, I enjoin us to be magnanimous to visit these stands and patronize them at the end of the programme. Also the final draw of the raffle will equally hold where three tickets for the star prizes shall be picked.

Fellow Cooperators, distinguished guests this year’s celebration provides avenues to reflect and keep up the decent works Cooperative business enterprise is characterized of, for sustainable growth and development therefore we must uphold the ethic, values, Cooperative law and principles guiding our activities and operations, eschew vices capable of tarnishing the collective good image enjoyed world-over by Cooperatives. Work decently and maintain “Decent work” always.


On behalf of the entire Cooperative Movement in Ogun State I want to immensely appreciate the “Peoples Governor” for this great honour by your physical presence today inspite your tight schedule, we are indeed very grateful Sir. Our appreciation also goes to the Honorable members of the State Executive, Judiciary and Legislative arms of the Government for gracing this celebration; our amiable Grand Patroness and First-Lady, Her EXCELLENCY MRS. BAMIDELE ABIODUN we appreciate you Ma.

We feel highly honoured and hereby express our appreciation to the President of the Cooperative Federation of Nigeria CFN, the highest body of the Cooperative Movement in Nigeria, High Chief Tajudeen Oriyomi Ayeola for his presence and wish you journey mercy back home.

It will be a great disservice and ungrateful act if we fail to appreciate the positive contributions of the Ministry of Community Development and Cooperative under the able leadership of our amiable Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Melutia A. Ogunremi, the Director of Cooperative services, other Directors and staff for tremendous roles played always that culminated in the success of this celebration. The press crew, the planning committee led by Apagun Elegbede Wahab Oloyede is highly appreciated for their efforts.

To my fellow Cooperators and all staff of Cooperatives in Ogun State, you are all wonderful people. I thank you all for your moral, spiritual and financial supports which culminates in success of this memorable celebration. Ajose wa ko ni baje o. Amin.
