 Cooperative identity today – interview with Martin Lowery What does cooperative identity mean and how is it relevant today? We talked to Martin Lowery, chair of the ICA Identity Committee to explore how embracing the cooperative identity and values can help to tackle some of today’s greatest issues. Dr Lowery has been involved in the movement for over 30 years and serves as the Chair of the National Cooperative Bank (NCB) and Executive Vice President, Emeritus, of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Read more
 Cooperative Conversations on the Statement of the Cooperative Identity The International Co-operative Alliance and the Co-operative College UK hosted two online events to mark the 25th anniversary of the revised Statement on the Cooperative Identity. Delivered under the banner “Cooperative Conversations”, this event featured live discussions with cooperators from across the globe, many of whom worked behind the scenes to define the Statement on the Cooperative Identity, its cooperative and ethical values, and its seven cooperative principles. Read more
A picture is worth a thousand words. #CoopSnapshot competition
What does cooperative identity mean to you? Could you capture this in a photo? If so, we invite you to enter our #CoopSnapshot photo competition! The contest will run from November 2020 until November 2021, with the grand winner to be announced right before the World Cooperative Congress in Seoul, the Republic of Korea (1-3 December 2021). Cooperators and photographers across the world are encouraged to submit photos that showcase the core cooperative values. Read more
Solidarity, social responsibility during COVID-19: case studies from Africa
While it is too early to predict the full impact of COVID-19 on the African continent, a report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) estimates that African economies will witness a 1.4% drop in GDP, with smaller economies facing contraction of up to 7.8%. Despite this gloomy outlook, case studies conducted in Ethiopia, Lesotho and Kenya, show that cooperatives have significantly helped their communities cope with COVID-19 embodying several Cooperative Principles. Read more
SEMO Electric: Crossing state lines to help restore power and rebuild lives
As multiple hurricanes make landfall in the southern part of the USA, lineworkers from electric cooperatives across the country packed their trucks and equipment to travel hundreds of miles to help restore power and help communities rebuild lives. In response, a total of 359 lineworkers from 30 electric cooperatives in Missouri left their homes to help. Read more
Cooperative insurers support communities during Covid-19
The COVID-19 pandemic is not over, and communities around the world continue to suffer. Cooperative and mutual insurers have stepped in to help non-profit organisations in their communities to stay afloat, in line with Cooperative Principle #7: Concern for Community. Read more
Solidarity in action: European consumer cooperatives stand together
Principle six – Cooperation Amongst Cooperatives – is an important driving force for Coop Italy and the Consumer Cooperative Union (CCU) in Bulgaria. In March, when Italy was among the worst hit countries in Europe, Coop Italy delivered  disinfectants, cleaning detergents and essential Coop-branded goods to CCU in Bulgaria to be sold in their local stores, and helped to contain the spread of COVID-19 in Bulgaria. Read more
World Cooperative Congress rescheduled The International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) has announced that the 33rd World Cooperative Congress will be held in Seoul, the Republic of Korea from 1 to 3 December 2021. The theme for this event will be “Deepening our Cooperative Identity” to strengthen the cooperative movement’s role in addressing global challenges and also explore avenues to improve lives at the local and global levels. The original Congress was due to be held in November 2020 in Seoul but had to postponed due to the COVID-19 crisis. Read more

 .Coop story of the month  Heart of England Co-operative Heart of England is an independent, regional cooperative society, known as the Heart of England Co-operative Society Limited. Their origins go back to 1832, when the Lockhurst Lane Industrial Co-operative Society was founded, near Coventry. Their current name came into being in January 2000, after more than 185 years during which more than twenty local, independent cooperative societies joined together to pool their resources. Read more

Coop Academy is a #coops4dev capacity building and knowledge sharing initiative that aims to offer ICA members from all over the world the possibility to attend different training sessions. Cooperators pay tribute to Sethu Madhavan
We regret to inform you of the passing of our colleague and friend, Sethu Madhavan, who served the ICA Asia and Pacific since 1975 and continued to be a responsible and effective member of the staff, as well as a friend and a mentor to scores of others, till the end. Sethu, as we all knew-him, is survived by his wife, his son and daughter-in-law.

Brighton housing cooperative to provide homes for local residents
After three years of trying to secure affordable housing, Martyn Holmes and his partner Agata Bogacka, who live in Brighton, UK, with their children, co-founded Bunker, a housing cooperative, in 2014. This idea developed as they chatted with their neighbours, who had similar problems finding and renting  housing  that was not overpriced and cramped. Read more
